Meet our March “Members of the Month”, Ray and June Haines.
Raymond Sherwood Haines was born in Salina, Kansas on June 15, 1936. He attended Langdon elememtary school in Washington, D. C. , Crane Junior High in Topeka and Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas and graduated in 1954. He attended and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1963. Ray served in the United States Army for 3 years as a combat engineer.
As a young man still in school Ray delivered newspapers and was a sacker in a grocery store. He worked for General Electric as a manufacturing engineer and in production management. He retired after 30 years from Seagate.
Ray met his wife, June, on a church trip to the Starlight Theater in Kansas City.
They were married on April 1, 1962 at the 1st Christian Church in Topeka, Kansas. They have lived in Utica, New York, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Louisville, Kentucky. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1966.
Ray and June became members of Village Christian Church in June 1966.
Ray has been the Board Chair and Vice-Chair and has served numerous committees. He has served as a deacon and is currently an Elder. He also sings in the choir. He is presently Co-Chair of the Outreach Committee.
June have served as Education Chair and has served on numerous committees and is currently the treasurer of Disciples women and an Elder. June and Ray are both active with the Village Venture program.
Thursa June Weston Haines was born on June 27, 1940 in Iola, Kansas. Her elementary school years were accomplished at the Finney, Kansas Country School. She graduated from Yates Center, Kansas High School in 1958. She attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka. She worked most of her adult working years in the insurance business in Topeka and Oklahoma City.
Ray and June have two children, Daryl Haines and Melinda Farris. They have 2 grandchildren, Isabel and Luke Farris
Ray & June both said that they did not have a favorite hymn. Ray says that he likes roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy and ice cream. June said that they enjoy going to Johnny Carinos. They also like going to Branson and Silver Dollar City.
June likes to read, garden and quilt. Ray likes music and he plays the mountain dulcimer. He also likes photography.
When asked “What is a lesson life has taught you?”; Ray’s answer was “I keep growing up about every 10 years.” And June said “As you get older you quit worrying about the questions and get some of the answers of life”.
